After waiting nearly 80 years, 97-year-old Margaret Thome Bekema received an honorary diploma from the high school she dropped out of in 1936. She left school in order to work and tend to her siblings and mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer.
But Grand Rapids Catholic Central High decided that, having chosen to forsake herself in favour of others, Bekema was deserving of the diploma. Overjoyed and in tears, she accepted the diploma at the comfort of her home.
Now that she has bragging rights of being a high school graduate, I wonder if she will decide to pursue a college education even with those high tuition costs.
