The current situation has led to this. This is a real product and the maker of this product isn’t making a political statement or trolling us. We’ve now had so many mass shootings that entrepreneurs have seen space in the market for a bulletproof blanket, made specifically to shield children from bullets.
The Bodyguard Blanket, made by a company called ProTecht, is a bulletproof 5/16-inch pad, made from the same materials used by our military, except it’s for kids. Given that the United States has one of the highest mass shooting rates among developed countries, they must have thought this was a brilliant invention.
It’s made from the same materials used in military and law enforcement body armor. Instead of having kids put on a vest, though, it puts the material in a form that can be folded up and then unfolded to create a body shelter. It has straps that help hold it in place like a backpack.
The caveat is – bulletproofing anything is expensive, the Bodyguard comes with a hefty price tag just shy of $1,000, though ProTecht hopes to partner with schools and nonprofits to make it more affordable to buy in bulk. Even with a substantial discount, it will likely be out of reach for most schools. If you take this blanket seriously though, there is one obvious design flaw in it… even when kids are rolled up in a ball on the ground the sides are always exposed, as seen below.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a bulletproof product for the classroom. Athat doubles as a shield appeared last year. In a better world, no one would even have the idea to come up with items like these. And to be honest, this company has gone overboard by trying to commercialize on mass shooting fears.
