ISIS or ISIL, is going mobile when it comes to terrorism. After news spread that the new Samsung Note 7 explodes, ISIS has been found to be purchasing large quantities of them, The Telegraph reports. Though Samsung has now recalled millions of them already, the Islamic State terrorists seized the opportunity and stocked up on these mobile phone bombs as they are still on sale in many places around the Middle East. Army experts speculate these combustible smartphones are convenient acquisitions for ISIS members for the simple reason that they are more concealable than other heavier explosive devices.
Derek Spencer, a department of defense spokesman, states that they worry suicide bombers will use the cell phones when carrying out attacks and that it will be hard to stop or detect them. Spencer went on to say, ” Unaware airport personnel could let an attacker in an airplane thinking this is just a regular smartphone, when in reality it is a Samsung Note 7, a dangerous smartphone which can cause lots of damage and potentially civilian casualties when it explodes. The phone can be used to carry out attacks almost anywhere and it wouldn’t look suspicious on a terrorist because almost everyone has a phone on their person at all times. It is imperative for Samsung to halt all foreign and domestic sales of this phone as it is an imminent threat to our national security.”
Samsung Note 7 phones have battery malfunctions, which is what causes them to become volatile. However, this unintended feature is now giving ISIS a more lethal and covert bomb arsenal. As of now, Samsung is in the process of stopping all sales to give their battery manufacturer time to fix the issue. The question is whether this smartphone will be forever tainted as the terrorist phone even after the massive recall. In the meanwhile, their stock, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. ticker symbol (SSNLF) has taken a small hit due to this setback on their flagship phone.
